My Presidential Positions

My Positions for the Presidency

Mark McAvoy

Health Care Reform: This is just a mess. I'm not going to lie about this in any way, but I think this is either beyond repair or something drastic has to happen now. The only solution I can see to this problem is having a single, central way of providing health care to everyone in the united states. This would be in effect what my home state of Massachusetts has with auto insurance, where the state controls the rates and there is no real competition between private industries. I believe that medicine is one thing that should not be capitalized. If someone needs medicine, they shouldn't have to fill out a billion forms then pay their soul to the devil to get it.

Tax Breaks: I know what you want to hear, and that is that I am going to get into office and start handing out government money like it's going out of fashion. However, the sad fact is that we cannot afford to keep cutting money out of our system. I would love nothing more than to give everyone in America their money back, but we simply cannot afford to do that. As of right now, our public debt is $59.1 trillion dollars. We need to focus on paying that back now, and then we can worry about tax breaks later. I know I'm not very favorable here, but without sacrifice, we wouldn't even have a country like ours today.

Gay Marriage: Marriage, to me, is a term used to describe a relationship between two people who love each other very much and want to spend the rest of their lives together. I believe that “social unions” are discriminatory and totally prejudice. The way I see it, if I truly loved someone, I would want to be married to them and not “unionized”. I don't like the term of “life partner” as a forced term on someone who is homosexual. 100 years from now, we will look back on this issue with the same distaste as we have when we look back on racism and the civil rights movement. That we even let the last one get that big is a shame to our country of freedom and civility. I understand that some people may have religious obligations, but I am running for president, not pastor, of the United States of America. From a governmental standpoint, there is no problem with gay marriage. As a matter of fact, it seems to have an upside of providing more money to our economy with all the weddings and catering and such things like that.

Abortion: My stance on abortion is somewhat of a middle point in the road. I believe that abortion should be allowed, however, it must be restricted. I believe that if a woman is raped on her way home from work, then she shouldn't have to have a constant reminder of that with a child. Before 3 months, I am totally okay with aborting the pregnancy. However, if some teenager is out with her boyfriend and decides to have sex with him, then whatever happens is her problem. She should have listened to the educational videos in health class. Also, if a woman is having sexual relations with her husband and that happens, they should be very happy. Conception is a special thing in a marriage, especially when two people want a kid. If they do not want the child, however, they can give it up for adoption. During my presidency, I would totally re-do the adoption process. This way, a middle agreement can be reached without endangering more of our children.

Reduction of Federal Government: We are a country at war and in debt, whether we like it or not, and this is not the time to separate. One of the only weaknesses I believe our country has is that we are way too divided. We care too much about our individual states, and this hurts us as a whole. We need to re-centralize some power, and unite as a people as we move forward.

The War in Iraq: I was one of the few people who saw news reports stating that Iraq did not in fact have WMD's (weapons of mass destruction) and saw no reason to go to war with Iraq. Sure, I didn't like Saddam Hussein either, and I criticized him for his treatment of his own people. I definitely think he should have been dethroned but we could have done that with one very well trained special-ops unit and a sniper rifle. We didn't have to full out invade and get ourselves involved in a dirt fight for 4 years, but we did anyways. My plan for the war in Iraq does not involve immediate withdrawal, but it is by far the best option we have. I believe that we should set up military bases to keep the peace, but not shoot unless shot at. We could withdraw half the troops one week after I am sworn in. After 3 weeks, we withdraw half of what is left. We keep 25% of our current troops in Iraq for another 2 months, then they switch out with another group of soldiers. They stay in Iraq for 6 months, and then the next group that takes over after them will be shrunk by 10%. This trend will continue, and by the end of my first two years as president, we should be in a position where we no longer need massive amounts of troops, and we can focus on other things at home rather than abroad.
